Today I am going to be reviewing a shaving cream by one of the most well known shaving companies in the world: Proraso. When I think of Proraso, I think legendary name with legendary products that are instantly recognizable. I feel like every wet shaver has used Proraso at some point.
Proraso was founded in Italy by Ludovico Martelli back in 1908. Their product line today includes aftershaves, pre-shave creams, shaving creams, shaving soaps and shaving accessories. Overall, their products have a very classic and traditional flare but with some updated formulas.
In fact, Proraso has been very innovative over the years and today has 4 distinct product lines that are designed for different beard types. More on this later.

High Quality Shaving Creams Made For Every Type of Beard
One of the unique thing about Proraso is that they make 4 different lines of shaving creams that are designed for different needs. Yes, lots of other companies make multiple shaving creams but usually the only difference is the scent.
Proraso actually changes the formula of the ingredients to help men get exactly what you need. Proraso refers to them as the four “product lines” and they are marketed as green, white, red and blue lines. So what are the differences?
- Their green line is considered their classic “evergreen” shaving cream. This shaving cream has been around for decades but Proraso recently gave it a slight formula change. The green line is perfect for the average shaver that doesn’t have too sensitive of skin or too coarse of a beard. The main ingredients are eucalyptus oil and menthol and it really will leave your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after a shave.
- The white line is made for men with sensitive skin that is easily irritated. It has green tea and oatmeal in it which helps prevent redness and irritation. Proraso describes the fragrance as “fruity” with a scent of lime and apple.
- Proraso’s red line is meant for men with thick, coarse beards that need some extra help softening up the hair follicles. This line has shea butter and sandal oil in the ingredients so it’s great for skin as well. The scent is a classic sandalwood scent.
- Lastly, the blue line is perfect for men that need a little more moisturizing action. It has aloe vera and vitamin E and Proraso says the fragrance is “spicy with notes of amber and musk”.
And the great thing about Proraso is that no matter which product line of theirs you choose, they are all healthy and easy on the skin.
None of Proraso’s shaving creams contain parabens, SLS, silicone, mineral oil, artificial coloring or propellants. Their traditional vegetable stearin-based formula is packed with natural oils which helps protect the skin during a shave by reducing both razor burn and other irritation.
Bottom line — all of Proaraso’s shaving creams are made with high quality ingredients that are easy on your skin, it’s really all about figuring out which product line is best for your beard.
Incredibly Easy to Face Lather
One of my favorite things about Proraso shaving cream is that it is incredibly easy to face lather. You can certainly use a shaving bowl, but I really don’t think it’s necessary.
Proraso says you can lather their shaving cream with a brush or your hands, but I highly recommend using a badger hair brush. You’re not going to be nearly as efficient or effective using your hands.
So if you do use a badger hair brush, you shouldn’t have any problem quickly whipping it into a thick lather. Proraso says they make their cream using a “hot-soap” making process and that is what enables it to become such a good, thick lather. Honesty, I don’t know enough about shaving cream manufacturing to know if that’s the reason, but they certainly deliver on the claim so who am I to question them.
One last thing, just remember that a little Proraso shaving cream goes a long way when lathering. Don’t overdo it and load your brush up with anything more than an almond-size of product — this should be plenty. One tube of Proraso shaving cream should last you several months.
Variety of Scents Are Fresh and Understated
I’ve already covered this earlier, but each of the 4 Proraso product lines has its own scent.
- Green: classic menthol and eucalyptus
- White: fruity scent with hints of lime and apple
- Red: sandalwood
- Blue: amber and musk
One thing that all of Proraso’s shaving creams share in common in my opinion though is that they have a very understated scent. You can definitely smell each of them while shaving, but it’s not an overpowering smell that stays on you an hour after shaving. It leaves a very faint smell afterwards and once you apply an aftershave or moisturizer, you probably won’t smell it.
If I were to give some advice, don’t focus so much on buying the line with the scent you like but focus on buying the shaving cream that will give you the best performance. So if you have sensitive skin, go with the white line. If you have a coarse beard, go with the red line...
Who Do We Recommend Proraso Shaving Cream For?
If you want a classic shaving cream with an updated formula, Proraso is a superb option. Each of their four shaving creams performs exactly like a wet shaving cream should: lathers up nice and thick and is incredibly slick lubricant. Plus, you get the benefit of choosing a shaving cream that best suits your beard type.
The one last thing I would say is that Proraso is a pretty thick lather so I probably wouldn’t recommend using it with a cartridge or disposable razor. And if you are using a cartridge razor, why haven’t you considered switching to a safety razor...?
What Are Some Other Creams & Soap To Consider?
Taylor of Old Bond Street
Taylor of Bold Street is probably the most popular shaving cream among wet shavers right now. Why? It’s easy to lather. It’s a slick lubricant. It’s easy on the face and made with great ingredients. And it has a masculine smell. What else do you need to know?
But seriously, TOBS is a great option and definitely recommend checking it out.
Jack Black beard lube
Jack Black beard lube is quite a bit different than a traditional shaving cream. It doesn’t lather but is instead translucent when it’s applied. The biggest standout feature of it though is i the name -- lube. This thing is an incredible lubricant.
I think Jack Black beard lube is really great for guys that have minimal or fine facial hair. Or if you really want to emphasize lubrication while shaving, this is a great option.
Proraso Shaving Soap
Proraso also makes one of the best shave soaps on the market. Their shave soap is available in the green, white or red product line, no blue shave soap line that I’m aware of.
I’m a huge fan of shave soaps and think every wet shave should try one out at some point. They do take a little more prep work and are a little messier, but I think they usually provide a little more lubrication which helps prevent razor burn.
