When it comes to wet shaving, there are a lot of different factors that impact the quality of your shave. But one aspect that I don’t think enough men emphasize is finding the right blade for their razor.
So many guys spend a ton of time researching safety razors and brushes and creams/soaps, but then when it comes time to pick a blade, they just select one without really giving it much thought.
And don’t get me wrong, finding the right safety razor for your features and attributes is really important. But it’s equally important to find the right de blades. Why?
Because if you use the wrong blades, your safety razor doesn’t even have a chance at delivering a quality shave. The wrong blades can undermine the performance of even the best safety razor. So don’t sabotage your shaves before you even start.

Men with thick beards or coarse hair that still want a smooth shave
Experienced wet shavers that want the sharpest blade available

Men that shave every day and prioritize smoothness
Men that want a close shave that's not overly aggressive

Men that want an aggressive shave but still want the blade to be above average smoothness
Men that want an above average sharp blade that is still forgiving |
Inferior Blades = Inferior Shaves
I like to describe the razor blade as the engine of the safety razor whereas the actual safety razor is like the body of the car.
Yes, the body of the car/safety razor is important to the performance, but without a really good engine/razor blade, it’s not going to operate like it’s supposed to. The engine/blades are vital to the performance.
It’s the razor blades that power the performance of your safety razor. The difference between the right blades versus wrong blades will make a huge difference in the quality and effectiveness of your shave.
So just remember: if you buy inferior blades, you better expect to get inferior shaves.
How to Compare & Contrast Different DE Blades
At first glance, all double edge razor blades may look the same, but they definitely are not a homogenous product. Different brands of blades perform very differently because they are manufactured differently, made with different materials, have different coatings, have different finishing techniques, etc…. Each brand has certain attributes, characteristics and intricacies that make them perform differently.
Which is a good thing. Because wet shavers need a variety of options. So it’s good that there are options, but it just means you have to do a little more work to compare blades and figure out which one is best for you.
So how do you compare de blades to find the right one for you? These are the top 3 factors we take into consideration.
#1) Sharpness and Smoothness
Sharpness and smoothness are easily the two most talked about attributes of safety razor blades. Wet shavers want to know is it a sharp blade or is is a smooth blade. And exactly how sharp or how smooth is it?
Sharpness and smoothness typically have an inverse relationship. In other words, the sharper a blade is, typically the less smooth it is. And the more smooth a blade is, typically the less sharp it is. Make sense?
This isn’t always the case, but sharpness versus smoothness is typically the main trade off with blades. And that’s why for most men, the goal should be to find a blade that is just sharp enough to shave their beard but smooth enough to not cause unnecessary nicks, cuts or other irritation.
I can’t overemphasize it enough — finding a blade with the right amount of sharpness and smoothness for your face and beard is really, really important. But unfortunately, it’s a lot easier said than done.
Why is it so difficult? Because there are no measurements or dimensions to be able to quantify either sharpness or smoothness. There’s no industry standard scale or measurement that can accurately measure the sharpness or smoothness of a blade.
And while lots of wet shavers give an estimate on a scale from 1-10 (including us) these are just an opinion and not based on any type real scale or measurement. So when I say a blade is 8/10 on sharpness, that’s just my opinion. It is entirely subjective and not based on any actual measurement.
Figuring out the sharpness of a blade is similar to judging the aggressiveness of a safety razor. Other people’s opinions can get you to the right neighborhood, but you will have to find the house on your own.
#2) Durability
When we talk about the durability of a blade, we are referring to how long it lasts. Basically, how many shaves can you expect to get from the blade.
And durability is another attribute that is highly subjective. Why? Because there are a lot of factors that affect durability. So even though one wet shaver might claim a blade can last them 7 shaves, another wet shaver might only be able to get 4 shaves out of the same blade.
Some factors that determine the longevity of a blade include
- Thickness of beard
- Coarseness of facial hair
- How often you shave
- How long since the last time it was used
For me, durability plays very little importance when I’m deciding which blades to buy. Why? Because it doesn’t vary too drastically. Most reputable, well-made blades last around 5 shaves for me, plus or minus a few. I haven’t found a blade that is just head and shoulders more durable than all the others.
For example, with most blades I can get between 3 and 7 shaves. And that might sound like a big difference, but when you consider how cheap double edge razor blades are on a cost/blade basis, I don’t mind changing the blade out pretty frequently as long as it delivers the performance I need. I’d much rather change a blade out that gives me a close, irritation-free shave for only 3 shaves rather than use a mediocre blade that gives me razor burn or can’t get bbs for 7 shaves.
Durability is just not a priority for me, the performance of the blade is much, much more important to me than just whether or not it can “last” a long time.
#3) Quality Control/Consistency
Quality control and blade consistency is hugely important when trying to find the right blades. Why?
Because you want consistency from blade to blade. You don’t want 1 blade to offer a certain level of sharpness and then the very next blade in the same pack feels wildly different on your face.
The good news is that quality control is pretty superb when it comes to blades. Some are better than others, but I’ve found that all the reputable blade brands are very good at consistently churning out high quality blades.
What Type of Blade Do You Need?
We will be getting into our reviews and recommendations in just a minute, but first it’s important that we help you understand what type of blade you should be looking for in the first place.
You see, there is no 1 “best blade” out there on the market. Some men need a very aggressive sharp blade. But some men might need a smooth, mild blade. And some men might need something in between.
So the first thing you need to do before you even start shopping for blades is determine what type of blade you need. How do you go about doing that? Here’s a quick cheat sheet.
- Is your facial hair coarse or fine? Men with coarse hair typically need a more aggressive, sharp blade.
- How thick is your beard? Men with thicker beard should use a sharper, more aggressive blade.
- What’s the length of your facial hair when you shave? Beards with a few days growth typically needs a sharper blade to avoid tugging at the hair follicles.
- How sensitive is your skin? Does your face and neck get razor irritation easily? If you get razor burn easily, you may need a less aggressive blade.
Our 10 Favorite Double Edge Razor Blades
Alright, it’s time to get into the reviews and recommendations of our 10 favorites blades for 2018. Hopefully you trust our opinions, but remember that’s all they are -- opinions. There’s no way around it, you’re going to have to try some blades out before you can really figure out what the best blade is for you.
It shouldn’t be overly difficult to find the right blade, but you need to have an idea of what you’re looking for. Just because a blade works great for another wet shaver doesn’t mean it’s the right blade for you. DE blades are not a one-size fits all item.
Personna "Lab Blue" Double Edge Blades
The Personna Lab Blue double edge razor blades are my personal favorite. Are they the right blade for every wet shaver? Of course not. But for my money, they are one of the best, most versatile and well-rounded blades on the market.
These blades are manufactured in the USA and offer an excellent mix of both sharpness and smoothness. In fact, I rate them as an 8/10 when it comes to both sharpness and smoothness. Very rare for a blade to achieve that kind of balance.
One of the biggest drawbacks with Personna Lab Blue blades is that unfortunately they aren’t available in many different quantities or in sample packs. If you happen to find it available in a sample pack though, please let us know!
But when it comes to performance, these are a premium blade. They are sharp enough to where they don’t tug at hair follicles but they are still smooth enough that it gives a very good but forgiving shave.
Who Do We Recommend Personna Lab Blue Blades For?
These are some of the most versatile blades on the market and are great for a wide range of wet shavers.
First of all, these are a really good option for a lot of beginners. They are sharp enough so newbies can learn proper technique but they won’t punish you for every mistake. It’s got a great balance of sharpness and smoothness for men that are still learning how to use a safety razor.
But this isn’t just a blade for beginners. It’s just a great option for any man that wants a sharp blade that won’t cause lots of razor irritation. This isn’t the sharpest blade out there, but it’s definitely possible to get bbs. It just may take a few passes.
Astra Superior Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades
Next up we have the Astra Superior Platinum blades. These come out of Russia and are manufactured by a Gillette subsidiary. They also happen to be some of the most popular and well-respected de blades on the market.
Astra Superior Platinum blades come in a variety of quantities, which is great because it means you can try them out without having to commit to a 100 pack right off the bat. I’ve seen them sold in packs of 5, 10, 15, 30, 50 and 100. They are also available in several of the popular sample packs.
So why are these so popular? Easy -- they are a premium blade that offers a great mix of sharpness and smoothness. For my beard, these perform very similarly to the Personna Lab Blue blades. However, I do find these just a touch sharper, but slightly less smooth.
These can’t quite compete with a Feather when it comes to sharpness (nothing else can), but they aren’t far behind. In fact, I rate these as a 9/10 on the sharpness scale.
And that sharpness allows these blades to get exceptionally close. But what impresses me the most with these blades is that they rarely cause any razor irritation. For being such a sharp blade, it is not overly aggressive.
Astra Superior Platinum blades have tremendous quality control. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a bad blade and the consistency from blade to blade is perfect. In regards to durability, these retain their sharpness and smoothness really well. I wouldn’t say they last longer than other blades per se, but the quality of shaves I can get from these is amazing quality.
Who Do We Recommend Astra Superior Platinum DE Blades For?
Astra Superior Platinum are awesome for any wet shaver that wants a sharp blade that also delivers on above average smoothness. That said, I think these are best for men with thicker beards and or coarse hair. Because the blade is so sharp, it can easily take off even the most stubborn facial hair.
I also think it is a good blade for beginners that need an aggressive shave. Yes, a Feather is a little sharper, but the Astra Superior Platinum is going to be a little more forgiving for beginners still learning how to wet shave the right way.
Overall though, if you’re looking for a sharp blade that can deliver a close but still irritation-free shave, this is a great option.
Feather Double Edge Razor Blades
Alright, now to the blades that I’m pretty sure every wet shaver has heard about -- Feather.
Feather safety razor blades are hands down the sharpest blade on the market. They are the only blade that I give a 10/10 on the sharpness scale and they are the closest shave I can get with just 1 pass.
These de blades are manufactured in Japan and they are available to buy in lots of different quantities. I’ve seen them available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 and even 200.
They are made out of stainless steel but are coated with a layer of platinum. They platinum coating is designed to help the blade smoothly glide across the shaving surface and also better protect it from early corrosion.
Overall, these are some of the highest quality, premium blades you can find. They are manufactured with the highest standards of quality control and it shows in regard to their consistency, performance and durability.
Speaking of durability, I’m really impressed with the longevity of Feather de blades. For me, I started to notice they were losing a little sharpness around shave 4 or 5. But considering how sharp they started in the first place, I find that really impressive. It’s tough for that sharp of a blade to retain its sharpness and smoothness for long but these do it remarkably well.
Who Do We Recommend Feather Double Edge Razor Blades For?
First let’s cover who I do not recommend Feather blades for: beginners. I just think these are too aggressive for new wet shavers to use. It typically takes some time for a new wet shaver to really learn what they are doing with a safety razor and you don’t want to learn from your mistakes while using a Feather because it won’t be any fun. It’s not that the blade is not smooth, it’s just not very forgiving because it’s aggressive.
All that said, experienced wet shavers don’t need to be intimidated by how sharp these blades are. Yes, you need to respect how sharp they are, but if you know how to use proper technique with a safety razor, these shouldn’t intimidate you.
So with all of that said, we recommend men with thick, coarse beards consider using Feather double edge blades. If you have a light beard or fine facial hair, you can certainly use these, but I’m just not sure it’s necessary.
These really are geared for men that need a really aggressive blade. So if you have really sensitive skin, I’d recommend going with something 1 level down on the sharpness scale. And then, if you ever get really comfortable with those, then you can upgrade to a Feather.
Look, Feather blades are awesome. I’m a big fan of them. I just want to make sure you ask yourself, “Do I really need this sharp of a blade?”
Polsilver Super Iridium Double Edge Razor Blades
Next up on our list we have some double edge razor blades that are often overlooked and underrated in my opinion: the Polsilver Super Iridium de razor blades. These are top quality, high performance blades and I have no idea why they are not more popular and recommended more often.
Polsilver Super Iridium blades are a standard stainless steel blade but they are finished with a coating of iridium. Hence where they get the name. Iridium is a transition metal and it really helps the blade in a couple of ways. First of all, the iridium coating allows the blade to just glide over the shaving surface without much friction. And secondly, it helps to protect the stainless steel from early corrosion.
These blades are manufactured in Russia, but they are actually another subsidiary of Gillette. Maybe Gillette is still the king of wet shaving after all. Or at least when it comes to double edge blades.
There have been some reported hiccups in the past when it comes to their production and being available for consumers to purchase, but I’ve never had this problem when I needed to buy them. Only thing I would say is that if you find out that you really, really like these blades, you might want to go ahead and stock up on them. They are usually available in quantities of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 100 and 200. They are also in some of the sample packs we will get to later.
When it comes to performance, these are another great option that offer above average sharpness and smoothness. I rate them as an 8/10 sharpness and probably a 7/10 smoothness. They are really good at cutting through tough beards but still being pretty forgiving and easy on the face. They are very similar to Personna Lab Blue and Astra Superior Platinum blades.
I’m also really impressed how durable these are. Their performance stays in peak condition for multiple shaves. I typically change the blade after 5 or 6 shaves, but every shave the blade performs exactly like I need.
Who Do We Recommend Polsilver Super Iridium DE Blades For?
Polsilver Super Iridium blades are a great option for a wide variety of men. They are perfect for men with thick beards and/or coarse hair. But they are also great for any man that wants a close shave without having to use an overly aggressive blade. They may not be as smooth as a Shark Super Chrome or a Derby Extra, but I think it’s plenty smooth for a lot of men.
It’s also a really good option for beginners. It’s sharp enough so new wet shavers can learn how to use the safety razor but still smooth enough so it won’t punish for every mistake.
If you have sensitive skin but still need an above average sharp blade, this is a great option.
Shark Super Chrome Double Edge Razor Blades
Shark Super Chrome blades are definitely one of the most popular blades on the market. There are tons of reviews online by wet shavers that love these blades. And although they aren’t suited for my beard, I agree that these are excellent blades.
Shark Super Chrome’s are made by the reputable wet shaving company Lord Company. You might be familiar with Lord’s L6 safety razor which is an excellent budget safety razor.
These blades are manufactured in Egypt and are sold in a variety of quantities. They are packaged though in plastic dispensers that each contain 5 blades. So if you buy 100 blades, you will actually get 20 plastic dispensers with 5 blades in each dispenser.Additionally, one nice thing about these is that the plastic dispenser is also a blade bank for your used blades.
The blades are made out of stainless steel but they are chrome plated. Additionally, they have a polymer coating to help give them a nice smooth finish. That’s why the manufacturer puts instructions on the box for customers not to wipe the blade down after using it because it could remove some of the coating.
When it comes to performance, these are a very mild blade. They are known for providing a very smooth shave and geared towards the wet shaver that wants to prioritize smoothness over sharpness.
That said, I would still rate these as a 6/10 on the sharpness scale. They definitely are on the smooth end of the spectrum, but they pack a little more punch than most give them credit for. I was pleasantly surprised that they were a little sharper than I was expecting.
Who Do We Recommend Shark Super Chrome DE Blades For?
Shark Super Chrome blades are a great option for any man that needs a moderately sharp blade that is very smooth. These aren’t quite aggressive enough for me because I only shave every 3 or 4 days and my coarse hair is too tough for them to handle. But if you have a light beard or hair that isn’t too thick or coarse, this blade could certainly work.
I also think this blade is a great option for men that like to shave every day. Like I said, it can’t quite handle my 3 or 4 days of growth, but if I did shave every day, I think it could work for me. It’s good for guys that need a quick shave every morning before work. This blade is sharp enough to shave the minimal daily growth but smooth enough to where you shouldn’t be getting any bad cuts or razor burn afterwards. That’s huge for guys that need a quick shave in the morning.
If you have a thick beard or coarse facial hair, I would probably go with something a little more sharp. But if you don’t need a really sharp blade, these are great double edge blades.
Wilkinson Sword Double Edge Razor Blades
Wilkinson Sword razor blades are manufactured in Germany these days, but the original company was formed in Great Britain way back in the late 1700’s. In fact, it wasn’t until 1962 that Wilkinson Sword started making double edge razor blades. Today, Wilkinson Sword is owned by Edgewell Personal Care.
These are some really good chromium-ceramic blades. They are above average sharpness and pretty, pretty smooth. The PFTE coating on them really helps give them a smooth and durable finished surface.
I rate these between a 7/10 and 8/10 on the sharpness scale. I actually felt like they got slightly more sharp on the second shave, which isn’t uncommon because with lots of blades the first pass is almost like a honing pass.
For me, Wilkinson Sword blades do a really good job of being above average sharp without being overly aggressive. Even with my coarse facial hair, I can just let the blade do all the work and effortlessly glide across my face. I never get any tugging or pulling from the razor.
I also really like the packaging and attention to detail Wilkinson Sword places in these. They are sold in quantities of 10, 50 and 100 as well as some of the sample packs we will discuss.
Who Do We Recommend Wilkinson Sword Safety Razor Blades For?
Wilkinson Sword blades are great for men that have sensitive skin but need something a little more sharp than the other mild, smooth options out there. I think Wilkinson Sword blades are in the second tier of sharpness so if you need something pretty sharp, these might not the blade for you.
But if you want something that can handle a few days growth easily and still give a smooth shave, this is a great option.
Merkur Double Edge Razor Blades
Merkur is one of the most well-known companies in the wet shaving industry for a good reason: they make excellent products. They make some of the best safety razors on the market.
Merkur’s double edge blades are another example of excellence in German engineering. The blades are made out of stainless steel but they are finely coated with Teflon. This helps the blades maintain their durability as well as ensure the blades will smoothly glide over the shave surface. Merkur uses top quality materials and has tremendous quality control when manufacturing these.
In regards to their sharpness, I rate these as a 7/10. I think they are a noticeable step down from the tier that are right below Feather. These blades are known for providing a moderately sharp, but extremely smooth shave.
I also noticed that these retain their sharpness and smoothness really well. I can typically get 6 or 7 shaves from these blades which is a few more than my average.
But what’s most impressive is the quality. The blade retained its sharpness and smoothness really well for all 7 shaves. Very impressive. While I’m skeptical about some of the claims I’ve seen online about how long these can last, I do agree that they are very durable and hold up really well for several shaves.
Who Do We Recommend Merkur Double Edge Blades For?
Merkur razor blades are a great option for any man that needs a moderately sharp safety razor blade. I don’t use these because I need something slightly more aggressive for my beard, but I’m really impressed with the quality of Merkur blades. They are some of the most premium blades on the market.
If you have sensitive skin, these are a really good option. They are so smooth that it helps most wet shavers avoid getting lots of cuts or razor irritation.
These are also a great option for beginners. They are ridiculously consistent so beginners can really learn how to use the blade and learn from past mistakes to figure out what the blade will do. Just make sure it’s sharp enough for your beard.
Derby Extra Double Edge Razor Blades
Not every wet shaver needs an ultra-sharp blade like a Feather. Some guys just want a nice and mild but still close shave. And for those guys, Derby Extra double edge razor blades are one of the best options.
Derby blades are manufactured in Turkey and are sold in quantities of 5. I’ve seen them sold in packs of 5, 15, 20, 30, 50, 100 and 200. And what I like, they are also available in several sample packs.
The blades are made from stainless steel and coated with a polymer and are synonymous with the word smooth as they are one of the mildest blades on the market. That’s not a bad thing, they just aren’t meant to be used by men that need a sharp, aggressive shave. Not a middle of the road blade and you should know exactly what you’re getting.
Very impressed with the quality control and consistency of these. In regards to the durability, I personally have to change Derby’s out pretty frequently, but I think that’s because my coarse facial hair just eats up the blade. But YMMV.
Who Do We Recommend Derby Extra Blades For?
It should be pretty clear by now that these blades are best suited for men that need a mild blade. They are a great option for men with light facial hair or minimal beard.
If you’re a beginner with somewhat thick or coarse facial hair, I recommend staying away from this blade. Lots of beginners think they will ease their way into wet shaving by using an overly mild blade. This doesn't work though because they end up overcompensating for the mild blade by pressing down with the razor.
I’m not saying this is a bad blade for beginners. It’s just a bad blade for beginners that have thick beards and need an aggressive blade.
Overall though, if you're looking for a top quality blade that is mild and provides a nice smooth shave, the Derby Extra blades are an excellent option.
Gillette Silver Blue Double Edge Razor Blades
Well look what we have here -- yet another excellent double edge blade made by Gillette. But this one has their namesake, the Gillette Silver Blue.
Gillette Silver Blue blades are manufactured in St. Petersburg, Russia and I’ve seen them sold online in packs of 25, 50 or 100. They are also available in some of the more popular sample packs if you want to test drive before you buy.
These blades are very similar in performance and quality to both the Personna Lab Blue and Astra Superior Platinum blades. I rate their sharpness as an 8/10 but they are still very smooth. One of the few quality blades that can both pack a punch AND be smooth.
These blades have really good durability and quality control. I can usually get 6 or 7 shaves out of a blade before needing to replace it. This is above my average. Plus, the blades are amazingly consistent. Each blade performs exactly like the last and I’m never surprised with an inferior blade.
Overall, these are just a remarkable blade that don’t sacrifice sharpness for smoothness or vice versa.
Who Do We Recommend Gillette Silver Blue DE Blades For?
Gillette Silver Blue blades are great for any man that wants a more aggressive shave but still wants the blade to be above average smooth and forgiving. It’s a great option for guys that only shave every 3+ days and have a few days of growth. Combine this blade with a good pre-shave routine and it should get the job done.
I also like to recommend this blade in the winter for guys that use a Feather the rest of the year. Why in the winter? Because that’s typically when your face gets a little more dry and sensitive. So by switching to this blade in the winter, it will still offer a lot of the sharpness but will be a little easier on your face. Hopefully this will help prevent bad razor burn and other irritation in the winter. Just an idea.
Crystal Double Edge Razor Blades
Alright, last on our list we have the Crystal double edge razor blades. These blades are used to being talked about last because it seems like they kind of fly under the radar.
These blades are manufactured in Israel by Personna so sometimes they are referred to as “Israeli Personna’s”, but don't confuse them with the actual Personna Lab Blue. These are available in a few of the popular sample packs, but they are most commonly sold in packs of either 100 or 120.
They are a standard stainless steel blade but are coated with a platinum chrome coating. The coating helps provide a smooth finish and keeps the blade durable.
Overall, these are really good, semi-sharp, durable and forgiving blades. They are slightly above average in sharpness and smoothness. I rate them as a 7/10 in both categories.
Who Do We Recommend Crystal Safety Razor Blades For?
Crystal de blades are a really good option for beginners. They are slightly sharp but not overly aggressive so they are a good blade to learn with because you won’t pay for every little mistake.
I also think they are a really good option for guys that have a combination of a light beard and fine to medium hair. I would probably recommend something a little sharper if you have a thick beard or coarse hair, but if you don't need a really aggressive blade then this is an excellent option.
Still Not Sure? Test Drive Before You Commit
If you’re still unsure what blade will work best for you, we highly recommend starting with a sample pack. In fact, I usually recommend all beginners start off with a sample pack. By starting with a sample pack, you get to try out a bunch of different blades and really figure out which one works best for you before investing in 100 blades they might not be right for you.
You may think you have an idea of what’s going to be best for your beard and face, but how can you really know until you actually try a few different options?
3 Great DE Blade Sample Packs

This is one of my favorite sample packs because it comes with so many different options and variety. It comes with 30 total de blades from 15 different brands. So you get 2 blades from each brand.
And of the 15 different brands, it includes a lot of our favorites: Astra Superior Platinum, Derby Extra, Feather, Gillette Silver Blue, Merkur Super, Polsilver Super Iridium, Wilkinson Sword.
This sample pack is perfect if you don’t know where to start and want to try different sharp/smooth options. It’s got a nice mix of sharp blades (Feather, Astra, Gillette, Polsilver) and smooth blades (Derby, Merkur) so you can really test a good range of blades out.

This is another great sample pack option for men that want to try out a good variety of blades. It has less options than the first sample pack as this only has 7 different brands, but you get 3 blades of each brand. So it really allows you to test a blade out and figure out if it’s the right one for you.
This pack includes a lot of our favorites as well: Wilkinson Sword, Astra Superior Platinum, Feather, Derby Extra. It doesn’t have as many “smooth” options, but if you’re looking for a sharper blade, this pack is a great option.

Our last sample pack comes with quite a few more blades (70) from 12 different brands. You get 5 or more blades from each brand.
This sample pack offers a really nice mix of sharp and smooth options. Plus, it comes with additional highly regarded blades that we haven’t reviewed yet like the Gillette 7 O’clock and Shark Super Stainless.
This is a great pack for the wet shaver that really wants to try out a wide variety of top performing de blades.
